Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Keene, New Hampshire, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1829. During the Mexican-American War he served in the Siege of Vera Cruz and in the Battles of Cerro Gordo, Churubusco, and Molino del Rey, where he was wounded. When the Civil War began he served first as Major of the 6th United States Regular Infantry, then as Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th United States Regular Infantry, then finally Colonel of the 8th United States Regular Infantry. He retired due to old battle injuries in 1864 and on March 13 of the following year received the brevet of Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "long and faithful services in the army".
