Hans Bonefeld Dies At 86
Was First Postmaster At Stonington


Hans H. Bonefeld, 86, one of the earliest settlers of the Stonington peninsula, and postmaster there many years, died at 7:15 last evening at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs Victor Peterson, 1118 Washington avenue. He has been in poor health several years.

Mr. Bonefeld was born in Als, Denmark, May 19, 1864, and came to the United States June 21, 1886 with the late Peter Jensen, to settle in Stonington. He established the Stonington post office in July of 1897 and served as postmaster for 25 years.

He married Christina Iversen in Escanaba November 28 1888, and he and Mrs. Bonefeld observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1948 (sic). Mrs. Bonefeld died April 7, 1939. After her death, Mr. Bonefeld divided his time between Stonington and Escanaba and five years ago he moved here to make his home with his daughter.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church of Stonington and of the Danish Brotherhood.

Surviving are the one daughter, and one son, Harry Bonefeld of Glen Ellyn Ill., two grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnsen of King City, Calif., and Mrs. Chris Jensen and Miss Sophie Bonefeld who live in Denmark.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Tuesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran church with Rev. Johannes Ringstad officiating. Burial will be in the Stonington cemetery. The body is at the Anderson funeral home and will be removed to the church at one o'clock Tuesday.
