P.W. MCKAY, 56, LIBRARY'S 'SOUL' DIES

Author: Ellen Robertson Times-Dispatch Staff Writer

Article Text:
As assistant director of public services, Patricia Walsh McKay was "the heart and soul" of the Richmond Public Library, said library graphic designer Sharon Fuller.
She worked with all of the library's programs and services to the public - children's and adult programming, grants, the homework helps program, and partnerships with Richmond public schools and the Richmond Department of Recreation and Parks.
She promoted library services in marketing and public relations and worked closely with the library board, Friends of the Richmond Public Library, and the library foundation board.
Mrs. McKay, who had served the library for 27 years, died of cancer Tuesday at age 56. She had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in August 2003 and had been away from her post since that time.
The Varina resident joined the library as children's librarian at the Broad Rock Branch in December 1976 and was promoted to senior librarian in 1978.
In 1985, she became a program coordinator at the main branch downtown, where she started working in public relations and marketing.
Mrs. McKay became assistant director for public services in 1999.
She was "very much part of the conceptual planning of the current renovation of the library," Fuller said.
Mrs. McKay was known as a detail person. "If the Friends of the Library had an event, she would make sure we had refreshments and that publicity went out," said Kelly Kyle, president of Friends of the Richmond Public Library. "She was always a mainstay. She knew the things to do that would make things run smoothly. And she was close to all the librarians."
Her most arresting detail was the hat she wore to work and at work each day. She was known as "Pat in a hat," Fuller said. "She dressed perfectly and always had a hat and a smile."
When she missed her first staff meeting, her colleagues created boxes and bags of hats, which they delivered to her home.
Survivors include her husband, William A. McKay; her parents, Howard W. and Mary V. Walsh of East Rockaway, N.Y.; and two sisters, Virginia O'Neill of Houston and Barbara Walsh of East Rockaway, N.Y.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated tomorrow at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Eighth and Grace streets.
