Arkansas Governor. Educated as a teacher at Commonwealth College in Arkansas, he entered politics being elected for two terms as circuit clerk and recorder of Madison County, Arkansas. During World War II, he served in the European Theater, as a Major intelligence officer in the U.S. 3rd Army, with General George Patton. Returning from the war, he was an active leader in the Arkansas Democratic Party. In the 1954 Arkansas gubernatorial election, he was elected as a Democrat, the 36th Governor of Arkansas, serving until 1967, longer than any other Arkansas Governor. While in office, he gained national attention for his opposition to school desegregation, when he summoned the Arkansas National Guard to prevent nine black students from integrating into the Little Rock Central High School, in September 1957. President Eisenhower subsequently sent federal troops to Little Rock to ensure the integration of the school. After his final term in office, he retired from politics.
