Sgt. First Class John M. Hennen of Vinton, Louisiana joined the National Guard during his junior year of high school. This was something he set his mind to do since he was a young boy. His dream was to serve his country. Known as T-John to many, he had a knack for flirting with the girls. Though born in New Orleans, he lived in Nederland before his parents settled in Vinton when he was six years old. He was a 1999 graduate of Vinton High School. John was regarded by his fellow soldiers as an expert marksman. He deployed May 10 for a one-year tour training the Afghan National Army and police forces. He volunteered for this mission only two years after returning home from Iraq. John believed in what he was doing and wanted his son, and his family to grow up in a world of freedom. He was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in the Kandahar province at age 26.
