Dowling was a saloon-keeper & cigar-maker in Springfield. His ornately carved monument is a chair beneath which is the caption "Thou Shalt Be Missed Because Thy Seat Will Be Empty." The carving is one of most interesting of over 800 carved by Mr. Edward Levanius of Springfield, who was one of the last of the fine old hand stone-cutters of a bygone day. Patrick Dowling, the saloon keeper, died suddenly at his home at a late hour yesterday afternoon. His many friends were last night surprised to find his saloon closed, and they were still greater surprised upon inquiry to hear of his death.
Mr. Dowling has been in the saloon business for some time past, but has been at his present stand for only a short time, having purchased it about six months ago.
The deceased was 41 years of age, and besides his wife, he leaves two children, one son, aged 16 years, and one little daughter, Ethel, aged 3 years. He also leaves three brothers, all of whom reside in St. Louis.
