Solomon J. Despain

Solomon Joseph Despain was born to Nancy Bell and Captain Solomon DeSpain.

When a young boy, he moved with his parents into Tennesee; afterwards he lived in Kansas and later in Calhoun, Illinois, where Solomon married Ruth Amelia Newell on June 30, 1842 in Mt. Vernon, Indiana.

Soon after he married he joined the Campbellites, with whom he remained until August 30, 1851, when he and his wife baptised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was ordained a Priest November 16, 1851. He served a mission in Arkansas until April 11, 1854, and he visited relatives in that state and baptised quite a few of them. Agreeable to the counsel of Orson Pratt, Solomon moved his family to Arkansas and continued to work in the church.

In 1861, he emigrated with his family to Utah, crossing the plains with David H. Cannon's Company, which arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah August 17, 1861. He settled in Granite Ward, Salt Lake County, Utah. On May 17, 1862 he married Susan Dean; later he married Charlotte Lundstedt. In 1877, he was chosen Bishop of the Granite Ward, which he held until 1886, when he removed to Arizona and located at Thatcher where he resided until his death. He was the father of twenty-seven children seventeen boys and ten girls.

Solomon had a business partner John Mills Wooley who died in 1864 and left a widow (Caroline) with children -- she never remarried. It is accepted that Solomon was sealed to her to provide for her needs only. There was never a spousal relationship.
