Betty L. Foster Atkinson, 76, of Spencer, died Sunday, June 10, 2007, in Cedar Grove Personal Care Facilities, Parkersburg.
She was born June 12, 1930, in Spencer, a daughter of the late Jarrett A. and Carrie A. Smith Foster. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, June Y. Mount.
Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Board of Christian Education and a member of the Prayer Ministries.
She was a 4-H leader for 35 years. Also, she was a member of the Roane County 4-H Foundation and the 4-H All-Stars.
Betty was co-founder and co-coordinator of Roane County CAP. She was a former president of the Roane County Republican Women. She was a member of the Roane General Hospital Auxiliary, the Board of Directors of Building Blocks Child Development and the Roane County Retired School Personnel.
She retired in 1994 from the Roane County Board of Education as counselor of the Spencer Middle School. Betty served as president and treasurer of the W.Va. Professional Educator's Association, Inc. She was a member of the American Association of Counselors; former treasurer and membership chairperson of the W.Va. Counselor's Association.
Betty was a 1947 graduate of Spencer High School. She earned her B.A. at Marshall University and her Master's in counseling at WVCOGS.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Beth and Richard Page of Pinehurst, N.C., Carrie Ann and Bill Brezinski of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald D. and Cathy Atkinson of Vass, N.C., Randall L. and Cara Atkinson of Parkersburg; one sister, Nancy R. Bennett of Eleanor; seven grandchildren, Nathan and Anna Stonestreet, Jacob, Carrie and Will Brezinski, Jarrett and Gabriel Atkinson; one great-granddaughter, Lauren Stonestreet.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, June 12, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. "Mike" King officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery, Spencer.
Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Spencer and one hour prior to the service Tuesday.
