Fred was born with the name "Fritz Mendell Israelske" to Adolph Israelske and Minnie Weisenberger. His parents owned and operated the Tremont Street Delicatessen in Denver. In the early 1920's, Fred lived in San Francisco, California, with cousins and worked. He returned to Denver and married his first wife, Marie J. Wustum, in 1925. Fred and Marie had two sons before divorcing in 1929. The boys were later adopted by Marie's second husband, Leonard Degginger. Fred was a prisoner at the Colorado State Penitentiary for several months in 1929, to which he was sentenced for "Con Games" in Denver. After his release, he traveled the country, hopping freight trains and working with carnivals.
