Major League Baseball Player. An outfielder who started playing professionally in the 1920's. He entered the major leagues with the old Brooklyn Robins from 1925 to 1932, then played for Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds until 1936, when he returned to the minor leagues until 1945. That year, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, played 37 games, and then retired. He worked as a scout for several teams from 1946 until 1964. Between 1928 and 1932, Herman averaged 200 hits per year, and his five-year batting average was .350. From 1926 through 1932, his average was sixty points higher than the team he played on and forty-nine points higher than the league average. With Pittsburgh, he became the first player to hit a home run in a night game, and he averaged over .300 in batting again.
