US Congressman. He enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, being mustered in as a Corporal in Company I, 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 18, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1862, he served until he was discharged due to disability on December 29, 1862. After the war he worked as a skilled machinist, and became involved in politics, eventually serving in both the New Jersey State Legislature and in the New Jersey State Senate. In 1890 he ran as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, and defeated incumbent Republican Congressman William McAdoo for the seat. He served from 1891 until his death in office in November 1892.
