He played Major League Baseball as a second baseman for seven seasons (1944 to 1950) with the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and the Boston Braves. Broke in as a 2nd baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1944, and helped them to the World Series as a rookie. Batted .412 in the 1944 Series, which saw his Cardinals defeat the St. Louis Browns 4 games to 2. He was selected as an All-Star in 1945, but was unable to play due to injuries. That year he led all 2nd Basemen in fielding percentage. In 1946 he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies after playing one game for the Cardinals. In 1947 he was again selected to the All-Star game for the Phils, this time participating in the contest. Traded to the Chicago Cubs mid-way through the 1948 season, playing for them until 1950, when he joined the Boston Braves. He played for the Braves in only 4 games before he retired, compiling a .272 career batting average. He had only 1 career home run, hit during the 1948 season with the Cubs.
