My Great grandfather was a tailor by trade in Oakland. He was a naturalized citizen of the United States. He came to America in 1877. I don't know if he came with his wife, Katherine or if they met and married later in San Francisco.

He is buried inside the front gate of Mt. View Cemetery in Alameda, CA. At the time of his death, he was 66 years, 3 months and 4 days old. I don't think his killers were ever caught.

He was my great grandfather.

While Henry Ernst, an aged Oakland tailor, who was struck on the head while working in his shop at 915 Clay St., Oakland, Saturday, is hovering between life and death at the Oakland Emergency Hospital, detectives are endeavoring to locate the two men who are believed to be his assailants. A description of the men was given to the police by F.F. Clay, a poultry dealer, whose store is across the street from the scene of the alleged assault. An operation was performed on Ernst by Drs. Ashley, Irwin, Reinie and Hamlin at the emergency hospital, who removed a two inch section of the skull.

Father of Arthur Ernst is dead
Word has been received by Arthur Ernst of this city of the death of his father, Henry Ernst, who died in San Francisco as a result of injuries received when he was attacked and beaten by thugs in his tailor shop. The attack took place about a week ago, and the aged man has been hovering between life and death ever since. He was quite well known here where he had many friends.
