A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York, Pennsylvania, August 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 19 as a private with Co. H, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He deserted June 15, 1863, just after the second battle of Winchester but was arrested in Hanover August 17, 1863, and shortly thereafter returned to duty with no serious ramifications. He was shot in the left side at the Wilderness May 7, 1864, the bullet lodging near the spine. Admitted to Haddington U.S. Hospital, Philadelphia, he honorably discharged at term's end October 30, 1864. He was one of six brothers who served during the Civil War.
He married Catherine Altrogge, sister of 87th Pennsylvania comarade Bernhard Altrogge, August 5, 1866, and fathered Genevieve (b. @1869), Jennie (b. @1870), Katie L. (b. 1870 - married a Gehan), J. Birney (b. 1872), Mary A. (b. @1874), and William H. (b. @1876). After the war, he lived in Bittengers, Adams County, but by 1880 had moved his family to Philadelphia. Catherine lived so extravagantly, he claimed, that he deserted her in 1893, whereupon she sued to get half of his pension.
On December 14, 1909, he entered the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Johnson City, Tennessee, but left at his request May 12, 1910. He returned on November 28, 1910, and left for the final time, again at his request, November 1, 1911. Returning to Adams County, he died in Oxford Township of "Bright's disease."
