Maude Beadle, a pioneer in the operation of nursing homes, was born in West Windsor Township on June 21, 1881. She operated the Beadle Convalescent Hospital at 1300 High Street in Lansing, MI for 25 years. Maude was one of the first of such entrepreneurs to apply principles or rehabilitation in working with the chronically ill. Ironically, Maude herself, after months of failing health, was bedridden in the home over her final few weeks.
A 1948 letter from Lansing's Civic Benefit League describing Maude's selflessness in providing a home for the ill elderly -- including those unable to pay her -- sparked Tom Brenneman, the producer of radio's "Breakfast In Hollywood" show, to praise her work her and award Maude one of his "Good Neighbor" orchids on the series.
Surviving Maude were her two sons, H.G. Beadle and John A. Beadle, and her daughter Athol Withrow, the wife of John D. Withrow. All four were then residents of Lansing. Maude's husband, Lina C. Beadle, had died in November 1954.
Lina and Maude were married November 14, 1900 in North Star, Gratiot County, MI.
