His birth date is not known. His age was recorded as 11 in the 1850 census and as 21 in the 1860 census. Therefore he was born between 2 Jun 1838 and 1 Jun 1839. His birthplace was in Spring River Twp, Barry Co., MO until Lawrence Co. was organized in 1845.

He probably went in the mid- to late 1850s and joined his brother briefly before returning.

Enlisted 18 May 1861, Mount Vernon, Lawrence Co, MO, as Private, Co. E, Lawrence County Home Guard (Union), under Capt. Filler; mustered in 16 Jun 1861, Mount Vernon, Lawrence Co., MO; served until 10 Aug 1861, when Home Guard was disbanded.
Enlisted 8 Mar 1862, Springfield, Greene Co., MO, as Private, Co. C, 14th Missouri State Militia Cavalry (Union), under Capt. Hargrove.
Transferred 4 Feb 1863, to Co. E, 4th Missouri State Militia Cavalry (Union), under Capt. Parke, when the Missouri State Militia Cavalry was re-organized.

Baugh & others buried in common grave, Old City Cemetery, Boonville, Cooper Co., MO; all re-buried at Jefferson City National Cemetery. Baugh history says brother William brought George's body home on horseback & he was buried on farm beside
