He was a veteran of the civil war and in the part of Illinois where he was raised the underground railroad was active. It has been said that in his old age he talked about his adventures in that activity but as far as I know it was never written down. I think they may not have believed him.
The underground railroad did run right past the town that he lived in Avon, Fulton County, Illinois. He was raised by his father Charles and Stepmother Catherine Grim Murphy.
