Mary Olive Lake, eldest child of Silas Jasper Lake and Mary Worth Whitaker, was born on her parents' farm near Stewards Mill, Freestone County, Texas. Her Lake grandparents had migrated to Freestone County, Texas from South Carolina via Alabama and Arkansas before the Civil War. Her Whitaker grandparents were citizens of The Republic of Texas. The Lake family moved from Freestone County to Mineral Wells in 1906. Mary, who never married, was a devout Baptist and spent several years as a missionary in Puerto Rico. After returning, she made her home with her father and her sister.
