Graduated from college at Crawfordsville, IN and joined Co. B, 2nd Ind Cavalry Regiment on Oct 22, 1862. He was captured on May 9, 1864 and sent to Andersonville Prison. After mustering out on July 22, 1865, he moved to Big Rapids, Mecosta Co., MI where he praticed law.
He also served as Mayor of Big Rapids and 14th Judicial Circuit Judge before moving to Montana.
He married Mary Alice Osburn in 1870 and six children were born to them.
