Eleanor, the eldest daughter, was born in Ireland, in 1818 where her elder brothers were born, and came to America with the family in 1822, sharing their successive homes at Philadelphia, in Mifflin County, Center County and finally in the Beechwoods. Her mother died when she was quite young, and the duties of housekeeping fell on her at the early age of thirteen years, her next younger sister being only six years old. She filled her mission faithfully and well for a number of years. After the marriage of her older brother Andrew, her father sent her to keep house for her brother William, until she was married to Joseph McConnell November 18th, 1840. Soon after their marriage they moved to his farm in Warsaw Township. They remained there until 1850 when they sold the Warsaw farm and returned to Beechwoods, settling on the farm where their oldest son, William, with two sisters, now resides. Nine children were born to them, six of whom are living, viz: William, James Smith, Margaret, Fannie, Mary and Dexter Bishop. Martha, Fannie's twin sister, died in childhood, Jane died February 19th, 1899, and Eleanor died March 31st 1899. Eleanor, the mother, was a member of the Beechwoods Presbyterian Church, and died February 14th, 1862, in her 44th year. Mr. McConnell was a Baptist, and died March 3rd, 1885. Both are buried in the Beechwoods cemetery.
