John Q. A. McNutt
Co H 63rd Indiana Infantry

Indiana AG: John Q. A. McNutt, Recruit, no residence listed, enlisted Dec. 18, '62, Killed at Lost Mountain June 16, '64.

Death date 6/15/1864 in Burial Register. Originally buried at Pine Mt.; Co B 68th Ind, not 63rd, but is wrong. 68th regiment was not at Pine Mt.

Listed in VA grave locator as J Q Nutt, 63rd IND Co B.

Originally buried in a group of 9 graves in a hospital graveyard 3.5 miles west of Pine Mt.: David M. Long, J.M. Brown, J.Q.A. McNutt, Wm Boulds, Unknown, Isaac Hicks, Unknown Co B 100 OVI, Geo. W. Hempstead, Unknown. It was noted that Brown, McNutt, and Boulds could not be found in the 68th Indiana records.

The names of Long, Brown, McNutt, and Boulds were severely illegible. In addition, Brown, McNutt, and Boulds were marked as 68th Indiana and therefore, when re-interred in MNC, could not be reconciled with state records. Their headstones read Brin, Nutt, and Unknown U.S. Soldier. In August 2008, the VA received sufficient proof and corrected the headstones of Jeremiah Brown and John Q.A. McNutt.

63rd Ind was part of 23rd Army Corp, Cox Div, Cameron Brd. Col. Stiles. Col Stiles to Col Cameron: "On the 10th (June) moved out on the Acworth road to the right and front; camped in line of battle on the right of Butterfield's division, of the Twentieth Corps. Here I remained until the 15th, when I formed in line of battle and advanced toward the enemy. Our line of battle here was in sight of Lost Mountain. In the afternoon of the 16th (June) advanced upon the enemy, with the Twenty-fourth Kentucky on my right, in the direction of a strong line of works held by the enemy, and into which their skirmishers were driven. In this advance I lost 5 enlisted men killed, 11 wounded." OR Series 1 - Volume 38 (Part II), page 725
