"Mary Caroline Bauer nee Gebhard was born on October 14 1858 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Adam and Mary Gebhard. On December 25 of the same year, she was baptized in the Lutheran faith by Pastor Wagner. At the age of 6 years she moved with her parents to Brownvil (sic), Nebraska, being reared and educated in this community and was there confirmed in the Lutheran Church. On October 11 1883, she was united in marriage to Hans J. Bauer at Falls City, Nebr. This union was blessed with 5 sons and 2 daughters. In the spring of 1890 she with her husband and family moved to a farm near Gladstone, Nebr. where they made their home until 1920 when they came to Chester. It was here that her husband and a son, Carl H. died in the year 1937. A daughter Josephine, passed away in 1943. The last few years the deceased made her home with her daughter Mrs. Carl Frank (Anna). She enjoyed good health until a month ago when she fell injuring her shoulder. Since that time she was bedfast until her death on Monday evening, April 14 at 10 pm. at the age of 88 years, 6 months. Mrs. Bauer was a communicant of St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester. She leaves to mourn her passing 4 sons: William and Walter of Fairbury, Nebr.; John of Chester, and Elmer of Oak, Nebr., and 1 daughter Mrs. Carl Frank of Chester; 2 brothers: Charles of Falls City, Nebr., and Gus of Limon, Colorado; 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held last Thursday afternoon in the St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery."
