NOTED RHODE ISLAND STONE CARVER
1781-1856
Joseph J. Fenner was a Providence stonecutter and merchant. He was the son of Richard Fenner and Sarah Manchester Fenner. Joseph married Harriet Dana Manchester August 29, 1805 and the couple appears to have had eight children. Fenner sold grave markers and did inscriptions as well. There are approximately 135 examples of his work scattered around the area. Some of the other stone products that Joseph J. Fenner made or sold in his shop include mantles, door and window sills, window caps and hearthstones.
The document that appears below from July 23,1820 is from Joseph's work as a stone cutter. It is an invoice in the amount of $16.88 that includes the sale of two gravestones and the charge for carving the inscriptions.
According to historian Richard M. Bayles, Fenner Street in Providence was named after Joseph, as his shop was near the corner of Fenner and High. Joseph J. Fenner usually signed his work with the initials "J.J.F.". He passed away on August 31,1856 at the age of 75.
