Rev. Lowry's first work was done in Kentucky and Tennessee. His first pastorate was Lebanon, Alabama. He also preached at Camden and other points in Alabama. About 1865, he was called to the G. A. Presbyterian Church in Selma, Alabama. He accepted this call and served that church for a number of years with great acceptance. In 1875, he was called to the First Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Kentucky and continued until his death, as one of the most useful and eloquent ministers in that city.
Rev. William Lowry married Miss Maragret McDowell Bell on August 13th 1861. Known as Maggie, she was a daughter of Robert and Nancy Bell of Starkville, Mississippi; where they were married. They had three children to survive to adulthood and two that died in infancy. Maggie died in Selma, Alabama in 1872. On January 23rd 1874, Rev. Lowry married Miss Mary C. Dixon; no known children where born to this union.
