Obituary Tuesday, March 25, 1947. Alpine Native, 85, Church, Civic Leader, Former Mayor, Dies. Alpine, Utah County-- James W. Vance, 85, lifelong resident of Alpine, died Sunday at 8 p.m. in his home here of causes incident to age.

Mr. Vance was born Dec. 1, 1861, at Alpine, a son of John Wesley and Rhoda Freestone Vance. His father, Major John W. Vance, was killed by Indians in 1866, leaving two wives and nine children.

He married Lilly Darnall Feb. 22, 1893. She died in 1916. He later married Louise Heidel.
Active in church and civic affairs, Mr. Vance was superintendent of Alpine Mutual Improvement Assn. of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and bishop's counselor and later, bishop. He served on three LDS missions, the last being a short-term mission to California in 1926.

He was city recorder and city councilman. He had served as president of the Alpine Irrigation Co. and secretary of the Alpine Mercantile Co. He was secretary of the Alpine Cattle Range Co. and of the Alpine Dairy and Exchange Co., having served in the latter capacity since 1905. During his life he was elected justice of the peace and mayor of Alpine.

He is survived by his widow and five sons and daughters, Orville Vance, Mrs. Marva Anderson and Mrs. Lillie Willis, Arizona; Van A. Vance, Alpine, and Paul W Vance, Logan.
Funeral services will be conducted in Alpine LDS ward chapel Friday at 2 p.m. by Orin Burgess, bishop. Friends may call at the family home prior to services. Burial will be in Alpine cemetery.
