Joseph was born in Burgstadt, Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Johann Anton Lippert and his 3rd wife, Anna Margaretha Walter.
He emigrated to America with his family in 1833.
Maria Theresia "Tracy" Lippert and Georg Adam Lippert were his siblings.
He married about 1850 to Sophia Yerian.
