Antónia de Sousa Malta passed away peacefully. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Joe Borges Malta, and all 13 of her siblings
Born on Madeira Island, Portugal, Antónia immigrated to California in 1944 and settled in Walnut Creek, where she lived for over 60 years. She became a proud American citizen in 1954. She also maintained her strong Portuguese heritage through cooking, playing the guittarra, gardening, raising her daughters to speak Portuguese, welcoming immigrants into her family, and remaining active in the Portuguese American community.
With a sparkle in her eye, and a beautiful inviting smile, Antónia lived a full life as a matriarch to her family and the larger community. She leaves a legacy of love and devotion.
She is survived by her loving daughters Clarice Malta, Joann Malta-Weingard (Herb), and Manuela Mendonça (Joe); her grandchildren Andrea Waliszewski, Janine Farzin (Bobak), Joey Mendonça (Heather), Julia Malta-Weingard, Jonathan Malta-Weingard, and Patrick Mendonça; and her great grandchildren Parvis, Clara, Graham, and Oliver Farzin, and Henry Mendonça (born 7-21-18). The family would like to thank her caregivers for their devotion and care.
A celebration of Antónia's life was held at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette on Tuesday, July 31, for family and friends. Contributions in her memory may be made to Luso-American Education Foundation.
