Argentinean Military Officer, Legislator, Medical Doctor, Educator. He was involved, as an Argentinean physician, in the wars with Brazil and Paraguay, and the Civil War. He rose to the rank of colonel. He is also remembered for making several important medical discoveries including an important indigenous vaccine for the horrible disease of smallpox and his work in Paleontology. He treated patients in the Great Yellow Fever in Buenos Aires in 1871; this is the disease that later took his own life. He received his medical training in his own country becoming a professor of School of Medicine in Buenos Aires teaching pediatrics and obstetrics, and later, he became the dean of the facility. Later in life, he entered politics being first a representative and then a senator. In his honor, a series of postage stamps showing his facial profile were issued, and the Hospital Muniz, the oldest Infectious Diseases Hosptial in Latin America, was named after him.
