Civil War Union Naval Officer. The grandson of Declaration of Independence Signer Thomas McKean, he entered United States Navy at 14, and served in the War of 1812 on board the "USS Java" under Oliver Hazard Perry. He later served in the West Indies, and commanded the "USS Dale" during the Mexican War. During the Civil War he was promoted to Commodore, and named commander of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron in October 1861, serving until February 1862 when he was relieved by Admiral David Farragut.
