Elijah Merrell was the son of William Elliot and Lucinda (Smith) Merrill. His great grandfather, Benjamin Merrell (1731-1771) was a patriot who was hung on June 19, 1771 on the grounds of the Courthouse in Hillsborough, North Carolina by the British Governor William Tyron for participating in activities protesting unfair taxation.
Elijah was ordained to the ministry by County Line Baptist Church in June 1862. He was known usually as Elder E. Merrell. Elijah's active ministry lasted for more than 42 years. He became the first pastor of Greenville (Mineral Springs) Baptist Church in 1865. In 1881, he organized Sweet Home Baptist Church in Muddy Fork Township in Pike County near Nathan, Arkansas. The Church had 18 members and was connected to a Sabbath-school.

After Lucinda's death, Elijah married Frances Pauline Beasley on Nov. 10, 1887 in Hempstead County, Arkansas. No children were born to this marriage.
