Churchwell B. Tucker was born April 30, 1805 in Surry County, NC, son of Branch and Lucy (Blakey) Tucker. Churchwell married Rosamond Maude McKiney on July 11, 1823. Churchwell Tucker and family left NC and settle in Murray County, GA in the late 1830's (between 1834 & 1838) according to the Murray County, GA Heritage Book. His family was one of the early pioneers' settlers of the county. Some say the Tuckers were in Murray County before the Indians were removed. In some early county records (1863) the Eighth District is called "Tucker's District". Churchwell and Lucy had a large family, six girls and four boys. Churchwell B. Tucker was appointed Postmaster at the Holly Creek Post Office Murray County, GA on December 15, 1851, and served until approximately December 21, 1853, when his successor, Elijah M. Ellis was appointed. He was appointed Postmaster again on April 22, 1857, and served until the post office was discontinued on September 28,1866. Churchwell also was active in his church (New Prospect Baptist Church) where he served as Church Clerk from 1851-1866. (I have a copy of the original minutes from that period.) Churchwell, wife Lucy and other members of the family are buried in the church cemetery.
