Served in the Union Army, Company "B", 7th Iowa Infantry. Enlisted December 8, 1863. Wounded. Discharged due to disability. Parents: Royal Olmstead and Mercy (Moffett) Thayer Sr. Husband of Margaret E. (Carrier) Thayer. Married: 31 March, 1850.

Royal O. Thayer, Jr., served through the war and was wounded in the neck at Jonesboro, Georgia on 26 August, 1864.
