Joseph Whipple was the son of John and Sarah Whipple of Dorchester, Mass. and Providence, Rhode Island. He was married on 20 May 1684 to Alice SMITH, the daughter of Edward Smith and Anphillis Angell. Joseph and his brother Jonathan took the oath of allegiance to King Charles II in May 1682. Joseph was Colonel of the Providence Militia, representative to the General Assembly for 19 years between 1698 and 1728, and Town Councilman for 12 years between 1715 to 1729.
In 1723 Joseph gave 100 pounds towards the building of an Episcopal church on N. Main St. in Providence, his being the largest amount offered by any contributor. He also allowed the use of a plot of land at the north end of Benefit St. to build a school house, which took the name of Whipple Hall.
Joseph's will, dated 20 Jan 1744, was proved 19 May 1746. His inventory reflected a very sizeable estate of over 5000 pounds. Joseph and Alice had 12 children: John Whipple, Jeremiah Whipple, Joseph Whipple Jr, Anphyllis Whipple Lippitt, Sarah Whipple Crawford, Susannah Whipple Dexter, Freelove Whipple Young, Alice Whipple Young, Amey Whipple Crawford Gibbs, Christopher Whipple, Mary Whipple Barden, and Christopher Whipple.
