A fur trapper and mountain man, he established Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California, near Santa Cruz, in the 1830s. In 1842, he established the first sawmill west of the Mississippi River. In 1845 he married Catherine Tallatha Bennett, with whom he had four children. He was a colleague of the famous fur trapper and politician Daniel Boone and was at his bedside when he died. He also travelled with the legendary Kit Carson. In 1855 he was elected to the Santa Cruz City Council.
