Victim of the Virginia Tech shootings. Matthew, 24, was from Chester, Virginia, and was a graduate student in civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech. Matthew was completing his thesis on methods of predicting droughts and already had several job offers from engineering firms. Matt was a graduate of Thomas Dale High School, class of 2001 and was the school newspaper's sports editor and played basketball and baseball at Thomas Dale. Among the adwards and recognition he had received during his academic career were National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society at Thomas Dale, and acceptance into Chi Epsilon, Tau Beta Pi, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma, Golden Key Internatponal Honor Society, and Phi Kappa Phi at Virginia Tech. He was named "Best guy to take home to your parents". He was the son of Karen P. Gwaltney and Gregory Gwaltney Jr. He is survived by his parents; his stepmother, Linda Gwaltney;his grandparets, Granville G. Gwaltney Sr. and Lee and Donez Poindexter.
