One of nine Tolar brothers, all born in Cumberland County North Carolina and all volunteered to serve the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War. He served as a Private in Company K, 18th North Carolina Volunteers. He was wounded at Hanover, Virginia on May 27, 1862. He was disabled for later service.
