Cari's father is a retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, so she lived in several places in her life: Omaha, Nebraska; Bitburg, Germany; Fairfax, Virginia; Montgomery, Alabama; Maryland's Andrews Air Base; and Boston. She had lived in Denton for the last four years and had attended Strickland Junior High. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was ranked among the top 2 percent of her junior class. She was elected president of her school's chapter of Amnesty International for next year, was selected for Who's Who in American High Schools and won first place in a short-story contest at Cooke County Junior College. She was an avid environmentalist and a classical pianist. She also volunteered at the Denton Humane Society and provided a foster home for homeless animals. She was survived by her parents, Earl and Risa Crews of Denton; brother, Alexander Earl Crews of Denton; grandparents, Harry Dobbs and LaVerne Kilgore, both of Fort Worth, and Marie Crews of Sherman; and great-grandmother, Annie Keller of Goldthwaite. Cari and her classmate and friend, Jesus Garza, were the victims of a homicide.

Her full name is Shari Catherine Keeler Crews, her obit and the SSDI list her first name as Catherine. Her headstone reads Shari Catherine.
