Colonial Governor. Born in Boston, England he immigrated to Massachusetts with his father in 1633. Returning to England a year later to serve during the English Civil War for Oliver Cromwell where he apparently made an impact in the Lord Protector's service. Returning to Massachusetts in 1648 where he served as Deputy Governor under Richard Bellingham during 1671 through the year of 1673. When upon the death of Bellingham, he took the position of Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, until his own death while still in office. He is noted for his success with the King Philip's War.
