My grandmother Alice and I were in Troy NY for a short trip and I decided it would be a good idea to find Uncle Alexander Sheridan. The previous day was spent reseaching in Albany at the state library for his obituray in the Troy newspaper for 1932. I hit gold and found out what cemetery he was buried in. Since I once lived in Troy while in college many years ago, I thought I could remember my way around the town. I got us lost and the first cemetery we found was this creepy old gothic cemetery with an old crematorium and thousands of stones, some were very large and towering decorative sculptures with surnames of historical signifigace to Troy. The cemetery seemed to have no end but we made our way out and found the nearest gas station for a pit stop and directions! Finally, we find St. Mary's Cemetery and entered through the open black iron gates. Unfortunately there is no office for information and all interment records are kept offsite. At his point what the the heck, just go and look for him. The cemetery is just lovely with monuments engraved with Irish surnames and statues of saints. As the car winds up the road hundreds of rows of graves with and I'm feeling that there is no way we will find him. Up ahead I notice that the road forks and I can easily pull over to start searching and decided to call my mom on the cell phone to see if she had any ideas. The moment I say 'Mom were in the cemetery' I looked over to my left and there it is. A large rose colored stone sitting on the corner of the intersecton with the suraname SHERIDAN. I couldn't believe it and my grandmother sitting next to me couldn't believe and my mother on the cell phone couldn't believe it either! I quickly parked the car and ran and checked the other side of the stone and there was his name Alexander P. Sheridan. As an added bonus so was his sister Gertrude and brother in law Harry Mead. There were tears of joy. I can imagine that he srtategically picked this corner plot because he knew that someday his great nieces would find him. I think he found us!
