Hall of Fame Negro League Baseball Player. Born William Julius Johnson, he was a skilled base runner and contact hitter with a .300 batting average or better, and was considered the top third baseman in the Negro Leagues of the 1920s and 1930s. He played for the Darby Daisies, Hilldale, Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords. In the inaugural Negro League World Series 1924, he led the Hilldale club with a .341 average. From 1932 to 1936, he served as team captain for the Pittsburgh Crawfords, perhaps the Negro Leagues' greatest dynasty. After the racial barriers were broken in American baseball, Johnson scouted for the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1954, he became the first black coach in the majors and worked for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1959 to 1973.
