John Deardorf is the son of Henry Deardorf (Dearduff) and Margaret (Watson) Deardorf. His mother died when he was about 2 years old and is buried somewhere in or around Bedford Co., Virginia where the family was living at that time. He father remarried in November 1802 to Edna Thornhill. According to G.F. Robinson's, History of Greene County, Ohio, Henry arrived in Greene County, Ohio with his family in 1813. John met his future wife Aprahagia Johnson, and married her in Greene County, Ohio on 3 Apr 1823. By the year 1851 they were living in Iowa where they remained unto death.
