Union Civil War Soldier. Born in Monroe County, Indiana, he was the son of Abel T. and Lucy Ellen Edwards. A few months after the Civil War began, he answered President Lincoln's call for volunteers and enlisted to serve in the Union Army. Edwards was mustered in with the 13th Iowa Infantry as a Private in Company C on September 28, 1861. The Company was formed in Lucas County, Iowa. One of the men in the company, Elias Mills, later became Abel's brother-in-law when he married Abel's sister, Elizabeth. The formation of the regiment was completed a month later at Keokuk, Iowa and the men spent the winter of 1861-1862 in camp at Jefferson City, Missouri. The regiment's Corps was under the overall command of Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant and they were sent into action at the Battle of Pittsburg Landing on April 6, 1862 during the first day of the two day Battle of Shiloh. Abel suffered a mortal gunshot wound that pierced his lungs. He was transported on a hospital steamer upriver to Cincinnati, Ohio to receive care in one of the many military hospitals in the area. He died two weeks later at the 4th Street Military in Cincinnati when he was 23 years old. A cenotaph was made for him on his mother's headstone in the family cemetery in Lucas County, Iowa. His initials are spelled as A. J. on the Spring Grove Cemetery interment listing.
