She was the daughter of Johan Martin Hurst and Maria Barbara Raupp. Her godparents were: (1) Jacob Friedrich Hermann of Laufen, (2) Joh. Georg Koger of Vögisheim, (3) Jakob Hurst, (4) Jacob Raupp, (5) Maria Elisabeth Giese, wife of Jacob Raupp of Müllheim, (6) Anna Maria Stübling of Zingen, (7) Anna Maria Nüßbaum of Vögisheim. Maria Katherina Hurst arrived in New Orleans Dec. 18, 1853 aboard the 'Heidelberg', embarking from Le Havre, France. She was accompanied by her sisters: Maria Barbara Hurst (and fiance Jeremias Riedlin, possibly with his brothers Johan Georg and Karl); Maria Elizabetha Hurst Trefzer (with husband Christian and son Johann; she gave birth to a Barbara E. Trefzer 3 weeks after landing in New Orleans), and another sister, possibly Anna Maria (since her future husband, Johan Zimmerman was on board). The voyage was very difficult, with bad weather most of the way. After their marriage in 1858, Maria Katherina and her husband Johan Jacob Hess lived in St. Louis. They moved in the late 1860s to Shiloh, St. Clair Co., Illinois. Johan Jacob was a baker. Maria Katherine died in 1873, at age 43. Her children were between ages 1 and 14. After her death, Emil, age 8 1/2, Anna, age 5, and Clara, age 1, were cared for by her mother Maria Barbara Raupp Hurst. Johan Jacob Hess died 5 years later at age 58. After his death, Emi land Anna lived with their aunt and uncle Trefzer. According to the 1880 census, Clara became a ward of the Gustavus Shilling family.
