MILLER BAUM CALLED

PIONEER JACKSON TOWNSHIP RESIDENT PASSES AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS.

Death Claimed the Venerable Porter County Man Early Sunday Morning -- Deceased Came to County in 1835.

The withering hand of death came to alleviate the suffering of Miller Baum, one of the pioneer residents of Jackson township, early last Sunday morning after a long siege of illness from pneumonia, complicated with old age and general debility. The deceased passed to his reward after a life of usefulness, the greater portion of which was spent in Porter county and during which he was conspicuously identified with the upbuilding of the county, and more especially this immediate vicinity.

The deceased was born in Richland county, Ohio, November 27, 1827, being the son of James and Rebecca (Miller) Baum. Owing to the limited advantages for learning at that time he received but a moderate share of learning. With his parents he came to Porter county in 1835 and settled on Morgan Prairie, where he remained until he was past his majority.

On June 28, 1852, he was married to Caroline Billings, born in Fayette county, Indiana. Six children were born to bless the union, two of whom, Fred Wood and Mrs. Benjamin Elliott, with the widow survive the deceased.

Mr. Baum followed the occupation of farming from boyhood and at the time of his death owned one of the best farms in Porter county, embracing 340 acres, with a large brick residence on the same which is one of the best in the township.

In politics, Mr. Baum was a republican, but not of such a decided nature but that he could support the nominee of another party, should it be shown that by so doing he would be doing a public service. In fact, Mr. Baum was one of those broad minded men who looked at all questions from all angles before forming his final opinion, and by so doing earned the respect and admiration of the entire community.

The funeral was held from the family residence Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. H. L. Davis of Valparaiso officiating. Burial took place at the Luther cemetery west of Valparaiso.
