At the turn of the twentieth century, while working out of Boston, Massachusetts, a young patent medicine salesman and marketing genius urged the retail drug trade to sell his bottled tonic called Vinol. In return, each drug store would receive company sponsored local and national advertising along with repeat sales. Vinol sales skyrocketed and in 1902 he persuaded drug store owners to purchase stock in a retailer's cooperative which sold products under the trademark name Rexall. His franchise plan would increase profit margins and deter the self destructive practice of price cutting. He proposed formulating Rexall proprietary medicines from quality materials, with enhanced store and product identity, and selling under a "money- back" guarantee. His other unique strategies helped the company and most of the Rexall franchise owners survive the Great Depression. He was also the mastermind of the million dollar Rexall Train, that provided Rexall investors free transportation on a 29,000 mile tour across the United States and parts of Canada, which promoted Rexall products.
