John Albert Healey was born in Little Rock to John J. Healey and Stella Cleveland Coots on the 2nd of September 1910. His childhood days rivaled Tom Sawyer's in good friends and good fun, which one could detect in the twinkle of his eyes.
He was proud of his Irish ancestry, which was manifest in his warm manner, having grandparents from Counties Cork and Kerry. He began work as a care washer in his father's funeral home, Healey and Roth, and following his father's death in 1953, purchased the Roth interests to become sole owner. He moved the business from 815 Main Street to a newly acquired five-acre location at 5800 West 12th Street, and in 1975, sold Healey and Roth to the Griffin and Leggett families.
John or "Bubba", as he was known to close friends and family, served in World War II. After failing the Navy physical, due to blindness in one eye, he procured the help of a friend (and memorized eye charts) managed a spot in the Army at age 32. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. December, 1943 , and one year later on Christmas Eve sailed from New York Harbor for Europe. He served in England, France, and Belgium with Medical and Transportation Units. On return home he served in the Reserve and was discharged as a Major in 1958.
After retirement, he and his wife of more than 60 years, the former Jean M. Stevenson, spent parts of the next 12 years in travel adventures in Europe, North Africa and behind the Iron Curtain.
His only siblings were Mary Ellen Robinson and Maurine Nelson (Mrs. Louis C.) He is survived by sons, Robert Gordon and John J. Healey II (Betty Fleming); daughters Mary M. Healey and Rebecca McMath (Mrs. Bruce); four grandsons, John A. Healey II (Lisa Orzechowski), Robert B. McMath (Emily Stitt), Phillip B. McMath (Elizabeth Fleck), and Sidney H. McMath; and great-grandson, James B. McMath II, or "that boy" as Bubba affectionately called him.
John was graduated from Little Rock High School in its first graduating class in 1928. He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was an ardent Democrat, beginning in 1928 as a page for Senator Joe T. Robinson, candidate for Vice-President, at the National Democratic Convention in Houston. He was a past Grand Knight, Little Rock Council 812, Knights of Columbus, past president of Little Rock Council and Aerie 60 Fraternal Order of Eagles, Life Member of the West Little Rock Rotary Club, member of Serra Club, and one time Regional Chairman of the Arkansas National Conference of Christians and Jews - an original member of the local N.C.C.J. He was a member of St. Andrews Cathedral Parish.
Of all his accomplishments, those who hold him most dear called him husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend. To all these he was Bubba.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 30, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Healey and Roth, 5800 West 12th, Little Rock, AR (501) 661-9111.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Cathedral of St. Andrew with Msgr. Scott L. Marczuk as Celebrant. A committal service for the family will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
