ALEXANDER, GEORGE EDWARD: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Hartford Courant, The (CT) - Wednesday, July 23, 2003
Deceased Name: ALEXANDER, GEORGE EDWARD
ALEXANDER, George Edward

George Edward Alexander, 93, born and raised in Glastonbury, died Thursday, (July 17, 2003) in Virginia. George was a charismatic man with a warm and generous heart coupled with a wonderful sense of humor. He was a genius with aircraft and automotive engines. During and after World War II he worked for Curtiss-Wright Aeronautics and United Technologies. He returned to Glastonbury in 1949 to build and open Alexander Motor Sales, an auto repair business. In later years, during his semi-retirement, he worked for the Hartford National Bank. He was also a member of the Masonic order. He was a ''people person'' and enjoyed his friends and family. He liked music and as a young man often sang along with the operas he heard playing at home. Good food was one of life's pleasures. Day trips ''antiquing'' throughout New England was a favorite pastime of George and his wife, Loree. Making his own way in New York City from the age of 15 during the Great Depression, he worked hard and tried his hand at many things, including being a truck driver and boxing on weekends to support himself. As a youngster with an adventurous spirit, he drove a Model A over dirt roads by himself all the way to California. Arriving dozens of flat tires later, he decided he didn't want to stay and drove all the way back, again repairing his tires as he went. A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 24, 11 a.m. in Green Cemetery, Hubbard St., Glastonbury. Glastonbury Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
