He was 29 years old and was married. It was reported that John died from multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered. John was born on October 6th, 1938 in Icard, North Carolina. SFC Church is on panel 36E, line 002 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 11 years.

He was also 6th Special Forces as an advisor. He had been in at least 10 years and had spent three tours overseas, two in Vietnam, one in Korea. He was involved in Operation Jeb Stuart during the 1968 Tet Offensive, on an Airborne Advance Team Operation as an Advisor to the South Vietnamese. He was killed during an attack on Quang Tri City. He was killed when someone in his group either stepped on an landmine or when an artillery munition exploded. He was killed along with many others that day, either outright or soon thereafter. His body was not recovered right away. He was killed 31 Jan 1968 and his body was recovered 19 Feb 1968. The team was out on a combat mission when it occurred and the action was so hostile in nature, that it wasn't safe to recover our dead Veterans. He started this Vietnam Tour in October 1967.
