Sergeant First Class John Leonard Church, casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SFC Church served our country until January 31st, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 29 years old and was married. It was reported that John died from multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered. John was born on October 6th, 1938 in Icard, North Carolina. SFC Church is on panel 36E, line 002 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 11 years.

SFC Church 6th Special Forces Infantry with the 9th Airborne Battalion, Senior NCO, MOS: 11B40P Service Number-19589318. He was part of MACV, which is: (Military Assistance Command-Vietnam). He was also 6th Special Forces as an advisor. He had been in at least 10 years and had spent three tours overseas, two in Vietnam, one in Korea. He was involved in Operation Jeb Stuart during the 1968 Tet Offensive, on an Airborne Advance Team Operation as an Advisor to the South Vietnamese. He was killed during an attack on Quang Tri City. He was killed when someone in his group either stepped on an landmine or when an artillery munition exploded. He was killed along with many others that day, either outright or soon thereafter. His body was not recovered right away. He was killed 31 Jan 1968 and his body was recovered 19 Feb 1968. The team was out on a combat mission when it occurred and the action was so hostile in nature, that it wasn't safe to recover our dead Veterans. He started this Vietnam Tour in October 1967.

He was an instructor with the Airborne School and joinhe special forces in October 1968.He was serving as an advisor with the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam.

He is the Son of Mr Clyde Church and Mrs Zenie Hilton Church, 209 Fairfax Avenue, Asheville, NC. He is the Husband of Mrs Virginia Harrington Church, 1117 Wellons Drive, Fayetteville, NC. He is also the Father of Jeffrey Lee & John Leonard Church Jr. Brother to Julia Albright of Fayetteville and four brothers, Clyde Jr, Billy Joe, Fred and James of Dallas Tx.

He served with the Headquarters, Airborne Division Advisory Team, Military Advisors, MAC-V.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Korean Service Medal, The Vietnam Gallantry Cross, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal(s).
