Mario Julian Gougeon, a resident of Rose Township, died on March 11, 2007. He was 64 years old. Born on February 28, 1943 in Italy, Mario came to the U.S. at the age of nine where he was raised in Redford, the son of his adopted father, Donald Gougeon. Following graduation from Redford Union High School, he attended carpenter's trade school and began working as a carpenter, later as a chef, and opened Mario's Pub & Grub in South Rockwood which he and his son Gregory ran for many years. Locally, he was most well known for his twenty-five years as owner of the White Lake Inn, run by his daughter Laurie for the past decade. He was a restaurant chef who became smitten by a beautiful waitress, Jacqueline whom he married on October 19, 1973. Mario was a mover and a shaker and consummate "people person." Always outgoing, no one could stop him or slow him down. He never procrastinated, always visited friends in hospitals, was eager to assist and sought to find greater potential in all of life's opportunities. He had a great sense of humor, loved joking with the regulars at his establishments and truly enjoyed the sense of faithful camaraderie shared with patrons. While passing from table to table through the restaurant, even a stranger could instantaneously gather that Mario was a kind and compassionate man, generous with his time and money and good counsel. He loved his dogs, especially Buddy who was his sidekick - truly his best and closest friend. Mario and Jacqueline wintered in Indian Rock Beach, Florida in more recent years where he enjoyed his new boat and the visits of family and friends. His son-in-law Ron was his best pal, working and playing together for many years. He loved kids, being part big kid himself, especially his granddaughter and great grandchildren. In addition to his wife of over 33 years, he is survived by his daughter Stephanie Laurain of Lake Orion, Laurie (Ron) Pouncey of Fenton and son Greg Bondar of South Carolina; his granddaughter, Julie Marie Taylor; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jesse, and Maria; his sister, Teresa (Gastone) Giammarioli; brother, Leonardo "Aldo" (Mirella) Spizzirri and several nieces and nephews and his faithful dogs, Buddy and Daisy.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, Friday, March 16th, 2PM, with Fr. Leo Lulko officiating.
