Born in High Hill, she was the daughter of Edna (Withers) Dobbins and John Dobbins. She attended school at Dow before transferring to McAlester, where she graduated with the Class of 1934. She married Bill Altman on April 20, 1935, in the First Christian Church of McAlester, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1991. During World War II, she was employed at the Central (Rexall) Drug in McAlester, later going to work for Woods Drug No. 2 in February 1946, where she remained for 23 years. She then became co-owner of Margaret's Hallmark Gift Shop. She held this position for nine years and then returned to Woods No. 2, where she remained until she retired in May 1995. She passed away at the age of 87 at the McAlester hospital. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Dobbins; an infant son, John Cary Altman and two brothers, Don Dobbins and Campbell Dobbins.
